The Newberry Library is excited to announce its call for applications for Artist in Residence Fellowship Program.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Newberry Artist in Residence fellowships are open to artists of any nationality.
  • The Newberry sponsors international scholars under the J-1 visa.

Ineligibility Criteria

  • If you’ve received an artist-in-residence or short-term fellowship before, you cannot apply for another short-term fellowship to work on the same project.

Application Requirements

  • Project Abstract:
    • A project abstract (300 words) describing the significance of your project.
  • Project Description:
    • A 1,000 word project description elaborating on the abstract and plan of work.
  • Relevance of Newberry Collection to Project:
    • 500 words explaining why the Newberry’s collection is relevant to complete your project.
  • Current Resume:
    • Should include a listing of any awards, scholarships, or grants received. 
  • Letters of Reference:
    • Letters of Reference, in English, that speak to quality of the proposed artistic project, the value of a Newberry residency to the applicant, and the qualifications of the applicant. Artist-in-Residence fellowships require two letters of reference. 
  • Work Samples and Reviews:
    • Written works (play and video scripts; prose and poetry; works of non-fictions, etc.) cannot exceed 25 pages in length. 
    • Images and audio-visual materials. 
    • If your samples can be viewed on the web, please send them all relevant web addresses. 
    • You are strongly encouraged to include any relevant reviews of your work by professional critics.
