Earth Science Week, the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is sponsoring four contests focusing on the theme of this year’s celebration, “Earth Science Everywhere.” Unleash your talents and passion for earth sciences and enter their 2024 contests today!

Eligibility Criteria 

  • Earth Science Week Photography Contest
    • The photography contest is open to individuals of any age in any part of the world.
    • Earth science is all around us. Processes have occurred throughout Earth’s history and continue today to shape the world where all organism live in. Many of these processes can be witnessed in the communities and even in our own back yards. How are Earth’s processes shaping where you live? Use your camera to capture an image that shows the influence of Earth processes in your community.
  • Earth Science Week Video Contest
    • The video contest is open to individuals or teams of interested persons of any age in any part of the world.
    • Submit a brief, 30-90 second, original video on how people experience the same earth science processes no matter where they live. How are the ways in which people experience and interact with earth science similar around the world?
    • Your video entry might take almost any form. A public service announcement? An animated cartoon? A video incorporating your own original music? An audio interview with a family member or even a
    • professional geoscientist? Some other format? You decide. Show how people of various backgrounds around the planet are pushing the barriers of geoscience for Earth and people!
    • Entries must be suitable for display to a general audience with respect to language, visual content, presentation, themes discussed, and related issues.
    • All entries must be completed in English, and videos must include content that is entirely understandable to an English-speaking audience.
    • Must be original, unpublished work
    • Entries must be composed of original, authentic, unpublished material and must be the sole property of the entrant, not previously submitted to any other contest. Published material includes that which has been posted on the Internet. Videos may include footage shot at the site, animations, computer images, drawings, data, and so on.
    • In adherence to this commitment to promoting originality and creativity, the Earth Science Week video contest strictly prohibits the use of Artificial intelligence (AI) resources for video manipulation or enhancement to ensure that each submission reflects the genuine skill and creativity of the videographer.
  • Earth Science Week Visual Arts Contest
    • The visual arts contest is open to any interested person in grades K-5. You must also be a resident of the United States to enter.
    • Earth science is everywhere and has connections with all subjects, such as other sciences, math, social studies, and even the arts. Use your imagination to show the wonders of Earth, such as the diversity of ecosystems, the dynamic processes shaping landscapes, or the beauty of oceans and skies. Use your skills to blend your love for art with an appreciation for the planet which is called home.
    • To be eligible, visual arts entries must be two-dimensional (flat) visual arts project no larger than 24 x 36 inches, dealing with the contest topic.
    • Entries must be composed of original, authentic, unpublished material and must be the sole property of the entrant, not previously submitted to any other contest. Published material includes that which has been posted online. This includes, but is not limited to, Facebook, or any other social network website where photos have been posted and shared.
  • Earth Science Week Essay Contest
    • The essay contest is open to any interested person in grades 6-9. You must also be a resident of the United States to enter.
    • Earth science involves studying Earth’s structure and processes, including many challenges like natural hazards, climate change, locating safe water, maintaining soil for agriculture, and sourcing clean energy. Knowledge of earth science can be used to understand and address these challenges. Write an essay that describes an example of how understanding a specific earth science concept can help address a challenge currently faced around the world.
    • The essay must be in English and contain no more than 300 words. Longer essays will be rejected unread.
    • Entries must be previously unpublished, original content and must be the sole property of the entrants, not previously submitted to any other contest. Published material includes that which has been posted on the Internet.
    • In adherence to the commitment to promoting originality and creativity, the Earth Science Week essay contest strictly prohibits the use of Artificial intelligence (AI) powered resources to ensure that each submission reflects the genuine thoughts and expressions of its author.
