If you have a good eye for a photograph and are passionate about the built environment then take part in this year’s Art of Building competition.
This is a competition that celebrates buildings and the relationship people have with the built environment. If your photograph is selected as a finalist or is highly commended, it will be featured in public installations as the competition transforms construction hoarding spaces into art galleries.
So, if you want to share your vision and gain recognition as a photographer along the way then take part in this year’s competition. Entry opens in October and the winners will be announced in January.
Categories
- Architecture
- Focusing on the design and style of the built environment this category celebrates everything from the small details that make up a structure to entire cityscapes.
- Conservation and Heritage
- Cultures around the world are often described by their built environment. This category celebrates the poetry of old buildings and showcases their relevance into today’s modern world.
- Human Interaction
- Entries in this category capture the story of how people interact with buildings. From those who build their infrastructure to those who live, work or play alongside the built environment.
Funding Information
- The winners will receive a £1500 cash prize and gain exposure as a photographer.
What they want?
- Entrants can submit up to three photographs across any of the categories.
- Photos that inspire others to look at and appreciate the built world around them.
- Original work by the person entering it.
- The photographs must be entered in a JPEG format.
- They must also be under 8MB (per photo) in size.
What they don’t want?
- Late entries, once the competition is closed they will not accept photographs.
- Photographs which have embedded text, borders or are locked will not be accepted.
- Submissions that have won other photography competitions are also not allowed.
Eligibility Criteria
- It is open to both professional and amateur photographers.
- They accept entries from anywhere in the world.
Selection Criteria
- Their expert judges will select the shortlisted photos to be put through to the public vote.
- Usually around twelve photos are selected.
- The public will then vote for their favourite and the Public’s Choice winner will be determined.
- The judges will also decide which from the shortlisted photos will be the winner of the Judges’ Choice prize.
Judging Criteria
- Composition
- Are the objects in the photo arranged in a meaningful, pleasing manner or are they haphazard? Did the photographer use the best angle or otherwise interesting perspective?
- Lighting
- Did the photographer use proper lighting of the subject matter? Do any extremes of darkness or brightness lend to or detract from the image content?
- Focus
- Is the object of the photo in focus? If not in sharp focus, does it appear to be an intentional effect to enhance the image in some artistic way?
- Relevancy
- Is the photo an obvious illustration of the entered category theme?
- Creativity
- Does the photographer display some creative thought or original idea in the making of this image?
- Summary
- Does the photographer’s summary adequately describe why the submission delivers the category criteria?
